Your pool filter is the unsung hero of your backyard oasis. It works tirelessly to keep water clean by trapping dirt, debris, and microscopic particles. But like all equipment, filters don’t last forever.
Here are 5 signs it’s time to replace your pool filter:
1. Cloudy or Murky Water
If you’re constantly battling cloudy water despite proper chemical balance, your filter may not be doing its job. Over time, filter media degrades and loses its ability to capture fine particles. If your water remains hazy after shocking and brushing, consider a filter replacement.
2. High Filter Pressure
Most filters operate between 10-20 PSI. When the pressure gauge consistently reads 8-10 PSI above normal (even after backwashing or cleaning), it’s a sign that the filter is struggling. This often indicates clogged or worn-out filter media.
3. Frequent Backwashing
If you find yourself backwashing your filter more than once a week, something’s wrong. Excessive backwashing is a sign that the filter is failing to trap particles effectively.
4. Visible Wear and Tear
For cartridge filters, inspect the pleats regularly. Cracked, frayed, or stretched pleats mean it’s time for a replacement. For sand filters, check for channeling — when sand forms channels that allow water to flow through without being filtered.
5. Old Age
Most pool filters last 3-5 years with proper maintenance. Sand filters can last longer (5-7 years), but eventually, the sand becomes rounded and loses its ability to trap particles. If your filter is over 5 years old, it’s worth considering a replacement.
